What I Read: July

Here are some of the books I read in July...

First up, I finished off the Selection series by reading the last book, The Heir by Kiera Cass. I think I was kind of done with the series by this point. I didn't completely love this book and kind of just made my way through it. I also didn't appreciate the NCMO scenes in here that she had with one of the boys competing for the crown. (But I already mentioned in my previous review that I don't think they need all the lovey dovey scenes you often find in these kind of books.) I also didn't like the ending, it left me wanting a little more closure than it gave. I thought this series was a fun, fluffy read overall, but the last book left a little to be desired for me.

I really enjoyed These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. I love reading about pioneer women living in the nineteenth century and some of the challenges and realities they had to deal with and work through. This story is fiction, but it was inspired by some of the author's own family stories. I also enjoyed the love story in here between Sarah and Captain Jack.  I liked  how it was written as if you were reading Sarah's journal entries. (It made me want to be a better journal writer). I am a sensitive reader, and there were a few scenes that were difficult for me to read in that sense, so I am mentioning them in my review here. Other than that, I enjoyed this book.

Finally, this month I also read To the Rescue: The Biography of Thomas S. Monson by Heidi Swinton. I have been wanting to read this for awhile, and it did not disappoint. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I like to frequently read about the leaders of my church. I liked hearing some of the stories and behind the scenes experiences of Thomas S. Monson's life and various church callings and responsibilities he has had. While this book contained plenty of things about his 'church' life, I would have liked to read just a little more about his family, home, and personal life. There was quite a bit in there, but personally I would have liked to read a little more. Other than that I thought it was very inspiring and I would highly recommend it to others.

Those are some of the things I've been reading...what have you been reading? Anything you would recommend?
