When I was a freshman in college I spent a lot of time with my brother Tyler. We both attended Brigham Young University at the same time and enjoyed having a family member close by to hang out with. Lots of times I would cook him dinner and he would return the favor by taking me to dinner.
I worked at the candy counter in the BYU Bookstore my first
two years of college. It was a nice way to earn money while going to school. My
first semester at BYU I worked the closing shift (the store closed at 6:00 pm,
so it wasn’t bad at all). It was 10 minutes to closing time one night and my
brother came by to say hi. We chatted for a little bit about our day and things
going on, and then he said, “Melissa, I want to take you to dinner, is that all
right?”
“Sure,” I told him. “Just wait outside the store and I’ll
come meet you after I’m done with my shift.”
As he left, my co-worker slid up to me with a smile, “Who is
that Melissa? He is cute!”
I kind of smiled back and said, “Oh it’s not like that, he’s
my brother.”
In a surprised tone she replied, “Your brother! But I heard
him ask you to dinner?”
“Yeah,” I said. “He does that sometimes. He’s a good
brother.”
She just sat there for a minute staring at me with a puzzled
look on her face, not sure what to say.
“Well,” she finally said. “I don’t do stuff like that with
my brother.”
I just smiled to myself and thought, "I sure am glad I do stuff like that with my brother."
I grew up with ten siblings. They were and are some of my best friends. This is just one story showing the kind of brothers and sisters I have. I love them and I’m grateful I had a big brother that looked out for me while I was living away from home for the first time.

Melissa! Great memories I have spending time with you at BYU. victory dances at the grocery store and laughing. You always comment on how much I helped you but you were a life saver for me! I needed a sister close by and you were there for me. Love ya tons as always. We can't ever go back, so it is important to make as much of each moment that we can.
