Throwback Thursday-Mums the word

Note: Many people do Throwback Thursdays on Instagram or blogs by posting a picture of themselves from the past. I am using Throwback Thursdays to write stories from my past. Hope you enjoy taking a trip with me down memory lane!

My hubby, Charles, and I always remember this little story every Memorial Day…so of course we remembered it again this last week.

It was close to Memorial Day, we were still newlyweds in our first year of marriage. We had a little argument, as many couples do. Now looking back, I couldn’t even tell you what the argument was about. But whatever it was, my husband was feeling bad about it. (I was probably feeling bad about it too, but of the two of us I am the most stubborn. I am thankful he is not as stubborn as me. I have gotten better throughout our marriage though. I think. :))

Anyways, Charles had to go pick up some things at the grocery store, and he saw these beautiful yellow flowers right there at the front of the store. They also happened to be on sale at a great price, it was too nice of a deal to pass up. So he decided to buy me some flowers to say he was sorry. I had to go somewhere, so I wasn’t there when he came home. He left them on the table for me, with a little note.

I came home and found those flowers and the note. And they made me smile, for two reasons. First, that my cute hubby had thought of me and was feeling bad and wanted to apologize. Second, that the flowers he had bought me were mums…the flowers that go on sale this time of year because many people put them on their loved ones' graves. I didn’t have the heart then to tell him he bought me graveyard flowers. I remember just giving him a hug and saying thank you and both of us apologizing to each other.

Several months down the road though we were talking about that day, and I told him how it had made me smile that he bought me flowers meant for gravestones. He had no idea that’s what they were for. He just thought 'Hey, I can buy my wife flowers and I can get a really good deal on them too, sweet!' That is my husband, and I love him for it.

So now around every Memorial Day, when we pass the endless displays of mums set up in the store, he always turns to me and smiles saying “Do you want me to buy you some mums?”

My hubby and I back in our newlywed days :)
